I have just seen a group of kids ride by my house on bikes with training wheels and helmets on. I said to my kids who were in the room with me, "thank god thats on our street and nobody can see them" and they both said "why". I said well, they are pretty much set up to be made fun of/ My son said "Why, for being SAFE?" my daughter said "Yeah I'll go make fun and say Oooooh your insurance rates are lower! You don't have broken bones! Your parents CARE!" Then my son said "Those are Dr John's kids, of course they have helmets, he thinks head injuries are real".

So, I think I raised pretty mature kids and I'm proud of them.

Why would anyone make fun of others for wearing a helmet while cycling?

I am in my early 50s, and made it all through my biking years without a helmet. Still it would never occur to me to make fun of anyone wearing one, and if I were able to bike again (can't--bad knees), I would now wear a helmet. I've bumped and banged so many parts of my body, so many times over the years, and a brain is so important, so I would want to protect it with a helmet if I were able to bike again.

Too bad we can't get a big supply of spare quality brains and send them to DC. There aren't any quality brains there. Everyone in both parties in all offices there are moronic jackasses. Wonder what type of head injuries they sustained to make them that way, or is it all caused by substance abuse. Hmmm...Probably substance abuse, and then they go hit the voters on the head so the voters will re-elect them.

It doesn't happen today but back when they first started coming out I was one of thew few kids who wore one (and it saved me from a severe head injury). It was apparently not cool to wear one but I guess I was the only kid who understood the danger of a blow to the head. I had enough of them in school to know how bad they were. Funny how I was mercilessly ridiculed as a kid but as an adult many of these same people now follow my lead.
