I am still planning to attend Boise State, but I need to know if there is an "alternative" culture there. I have always heard that the area in and around Boise is very conservative, and that is the opposite of where I am as a person.

Or should I just go to UT San Antonio, where there is an alternative culture?

Why would you want an alternative culture? "Alternative" culture is NT to the core.

I am trying to date women who have aspie-ish characteristics and interests, but without these women actually having to be aspies--because there probably are no aspie women in Boise.

What I probably meant to ask is if there is a socially liberal culture, where people have weird and unusual interests, in existence in Boise.

I've run across a Boise newspaper that I think is kind of alternative. Here's their website:

http://www.boiseweekly.com/gyrobase/

Haven't spent much time with either the newspaper or Boise, so I don't know much.

You could always join the mormon church and tell us all how the indians are actually jewish and jesus votes republican.

Thanks for the link! Would you still recommend BSU over Montana, or the schools in Texas?

I would expect there would be more of an alternative culture in missoula, but I haven't spent enough time there to know. I hope your experience is different from mine, but alternative types don't like me any better than straightarrows, although it seems like they should, they don't.

On the other hand, a smaller alternative culture might work better for you. Persecuted minorities tend to stick together more.

Tim, you're thinking about spending four years in these places. I think it would be a good idea for you to go there and have a look around, get a feel for the places, wander around the campus and the town, maybe talk to some people on the faculty, pop in on a seminar, maybe visit some local churches you might be interested in, that sort of thing.

You will have to deal with culture shock. A lot of the highway signs don't have bullet holes.

Austin is your best bet in Texas

Actually, I am transferring as a junior, and would be there between 2 and 3 years, wherever it is I am going to school. Boise is bigger and has more job opportunities, but Montana does not require as many classes and allows fewer semester hours per semester, plus the on-campus housing comes fully furnished, while the housing at Boise does not. So it is a tough decision.

Which place would be better for a half-Lutheran, half-secular humanist like myself?

I would highly recommend that you visit Boise carefully before you decide. I'm a Mormon, and Boise is made up mostly of highly conservative Mormons. I mean HIGHLY CONSERVATIVE MORMONS. I'm more of a liberal Mormon, and my aspie son, who is VERY liberal, is serving a Mormon mission there, and I doubt that he has experienced much of an alternative culture (he keeps his eye out for anyone like him, and he hasn't found much in Boise that's like him). Now, having said this, the campus may have a small alternative culture -- I'm just saying it's more likely to be conservative than most other colleges.

I would vote for Montana being more to your liking.

Although the University of Montana is a good school, I think Missoula might be too small for me. The size of Boise is what drew me to there--not too big, not too small. Reno, NV, is the only other city of comparable size that I know of in that part of the country.
