My uncle described my late grandfather in these words "if you did not have something important too say too him then he was not interested"

Basically my uncle was saying that my grandad was not interested in talking about trivial things.

What does this say about how my grand farther might come across in person? His personality etc?

Your grandfather sounds like a man that, when he said 'no', he meant no. No ifs, ands or buts. It was either his way or the highway. He probably "knew it all", had an answer for everything, and probably knew what the politicians were doing wrong. I can just imagine his stance on issues such as women's rights, immigrant rights, holidays like Martin Luther King's birthday and the ongoing conflicts in the middle east. He probably advocated for the rights of gun ownership and maybe owned one or two himself. Seems like a man not to be crossed for any reason whatsoever.

"Not to be crossed" means that if you dared to get in his face about anything, he would either yell at you or push you aside. He wouldn't back down.

There is really not enough information to be sure about this. I have found some people who have had a really tough time with life for some reason, really get irritated with frivolous things. Myself included.
A year ago, I was so stressed for so long, I would just get angry when someone suggested my dropping in for a cup of tea, or I'd get impatient listening to them talk about how they finally made the perfect scone, or whatever. It just seem like stepping into the twilight zone to sink your attention to such everyday matters - like sitting with a 3yo for a pretend tea party after you just escaped from a concentration camp.

I took time and an improvement in my circumstances for it to improve, but even now, I have to sometimes remind myself that this is what people do, and it is not their fault my life has been so difficult, so be nice.

I has non-stop stress for years.

What was your grandfather's life like?

indeed having more information would help, I hate stereo typing although when you have little to go on you need a little of it.

My mum described my grandad as a regular army guy
He had diabetes which made him bad tempered and towards the end got cancer
Was described as quiet and charming
