Hi,

As most of you know, I live alone in an condo complex with neighbors. Anyway, I had attempted to contact the post office and have a postman come and pick up a package that of a box with a lid. I also managed to try and tape it together as well.

I got home this evening with some groceries and what not and I had a note on my door from one of my upstairs neighbors. They wrote that the mail man came and then they went on to mention that everything was wrong from the type of box, no proper postage, and the wrong tape. (I wrote the address outright on the box too)

Then they suggested that in the future that I take it in myself and have everything mailed or have a friend arrange to come by and pick it up. Yet, I did not notice them make an effort on their end to take it in.

So what do you think?

Hi Summer. I assume that the box was still there outside your door?

If so, I'd say that the note is neighborly. With the box still there (not taken by the postman), without the note, you would not have known that the postman did arrive for pickup but didn't take it and why.

The suggestion that you take packages to the post office is a good one because then the postal workers can tell you what needs to be done for the parcel to be accepted.

That the neighbor did not take the box to the post office is OK. It would have been presumptuous of them to have taken it to the post office without your knowledge or request. In the US taking someone's mail anywhere without their request is against the law, it's considered tampering with the mail.

Your neighbor did what he or she could.

I wrote a nice note back and asked if they could show me what boxes would be better and they were more than welcome to take the box. I even offered to pay them back if they did.

Why would you expect your neighbors to take your package to the post office? That's beyond unreasonable.

It sounds like the postman told them he couldn't accept the package and they wrote down the reasons why.

Just take it down to the post office yourself. Best solution.

Your neighbors were being more helpful than my neighbors.

A few things with the neighbor:

1. Others have had problems with her before in terms starting things by being nosy and even finding ways to pick fights
2. With me being on the spectrum, I have trouble reading certain cues and this must be that.
3. She suggested I have a friend come pick it up for me and that is where I mentioned the other about paying her back

So that is where I asked her to take it in and I could reimburse her if she were to pay for postage. She happened to say no and offered to show me her tape that would be better and that was fine.

As for the notes, yes she did mention that.
