EVERY TIME I talk to someone, and am speaking my mind, they tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about.

Why is this? Is it a "they're losing the argument/not enjoying the talk" thing? Hmm, those crafty NT's, I swear!

Could it be because you actually don't?

OK, so what were you talking about, and what did you say?

We were talking about PS3 and it's HDD and why the heck would anyone need more than 500 gigabytes?

Well, a library of games and movies could easily surpass that amount. I agree, the average PS3 owner wouldn't need it, but someone who'd prefer their games and movies on HDD instead of hard copy could conceivably use it. So, in this particular case, I think you were wrong.

I'm not sure what side of that argument the OP was on, but I don't think it's fair to say he didn't know what he was talking about.

It seems to me that phrase is a maneuver to create doubt around the other person's opinion. Or if they know just one tiny piece of information you don't they think it's casts doubt on everything else you are saying. It's an absurd tactic to shutdown the other person's argument.

But I /did/ know what I was talking about! How come no one ever believes or listens to me, like seriously!

I understand what you are saying. I don't get that people people tell me this. At least not often. Perhaps it is because you want your opinion to be known as fact?

They keep on saying that I didn't know what I was saying. But I do know what I say most of the time.

Look, when you talk to people, you're sometimes going to disagree with them about things. And when someone thinks you're wrong, he'll say things like "You don't know what you're talking about." So you can either demand that they never say that, only talk to people who will never disagree with you, or learn that it's really no big deal. People argue and disagree all the time, but they can still be friends afterward.

You were arguing about the hard drive capacity needs of a typical PS3 user. In the grand scheme of things, it really is not that important. Your problem is you cannot seem to stand that someone thinks you're wrong about something. And when it comes to opinions about things, you never can convince them otherwise, just like I'll never convince a Democrat to become a Republican. All I'm saying is that you can decide not to stress over the opinions of other people when they don't affect your day to day life.

Or, sometimes people really don't know what they're talking about, and it really does render their opinion irrelevant. I don't know about this particular case, it seems to be purely a matter of opinion, but I wouldn't say that in general "you don't know what you're talking about" is an absurd statement or tactic if it is in fact true. Plenty of misinformation out there, and no shortage of people willing to form strong opinions on subjects which they know nothing about, and then refuse to budge from them when confronted with real facts or an actual expert.
