I grew up near Boston. Most of my family still lives there. My comfort item is a Red Sox hat. Most of my shirts have a Massachusetts sports team on them. I now live in Oregon. When I go out instead of saying, "Good morning," people now say things like "How horrible!" in passing. My sister is fine but she was volunteering at the finish of the Marathon. I really do not need to be reminded how horrible it was. It seems to me these comments are socially inappropriate. Why are they doing this? What is the proper response? They are making me very uncomfortable.

This honestly makes no sense. Many people I know have worn Boston sports logos or Boston signs as a show of support.

Unless they are pro-jihadists or your mishearing their statements, something doesn't add up.

I asked an NT how she would respond if anybody were to ask her about Boston. She replied that she would say something like, "How tragic! My sympathies." before walking away so that the person wouldn't have any chance to ask her to give a detailed commentary regarding the tragedy in Boston. (I'm glad to hear that your sister is fine.)
