My friend just called and I didn't answer the phone!

I wanted to talk to her and catch up. I could use the friendship and support. By the second ring my mind had already processed what we might talk about, what I can contribute to the conversation, and how pathetic my life really is. I feel like I don't have anything that's really good to contribute to the conversation. Nothing fun, nothing exciting, not even any drama (I dislike gossip and self-pity). In my mind I had created this dialogue and I started to suffocate just thinking I might bore her. All before the second ring!

Why didn't I just answer the phone? :(

It's OK to call back when you feel ready and say, "Sorry I missed your call! What's up?" If I need to get my thoughts together before I talk to someone who's calling I do this.

Thank you! :D I mean, I didn't even think about calling her back.

Yeah, call back. But when you get that feeling ... for me it's like a loud storm in my head and I feel like I can't prepare myself for the interaction, just push yourself to do it anyway. The feeling will go away.

I don't know if you were looking for a literal answer, but I think you were worried. I do it all the time. It paralyzes me too. I do the whole rehearsing conversations in my head thing too. Like another person said, just realize that those thoughts are just thoughts. They only exist in your head, not in the real world. Then focus on what is going on around you in the present moment.
