I wasn't sure whether to post this in here or the Getting to Know Each Other thread.
My name is Stephanie and I am 24. I am looking for friends in my area to hang out with. I am having so much trouble with that, and I've been very lonely and unhappy because of this! My mom gave me the idea to ask people on WrongPlanet if anyone was from NJ. I hope it's not too personal. I live in Wayne, which is in Northeastern NJ. I'm looking for someone in their 20's to early 30's. I'm obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I love to go bowling, shopping, out to eat, dancing and clubbing and have a few drinks. I'm just looking for someone nice, non-judgmental, and fun, and its ok if you don't like clubbing or drinking. I just want friends and something to do with my life! I love dolls, and my Buffy doll goes everywhere with me. I'm a little immature sometimes.

Hi BF4L,

I have the same problem finding Aspie friends in my area, though I'm a 50 y.o. woman and live in South Jersey (Burlington County). I was diagnosed two years ago. Almost all of the local organizations are for kids. The one or two for adults seem to be inactive and are in Central Jersey or further north. Did you succeed in finding a local friend over the last few months?

BTW, I'm also a huge Buffy fan! Love that Spike... :))
Good luck.

Hi Chariot,
Yeah there's not a lot of services around here either. I haven't found any Aspie friends around here. I even made a meetup group for Aspie females in North Jersey and nobody joined. I go to other meetup groups to try and meet new friends, and I do, but it's never the kind of let's hang out outside of meetup kind of friendships. I've been dying for a local friend! I don't care how old you are, as long as you like Buffy you're awesome!! Spike is HOT!! !! !! !

Hi BF4L,

Thanks so much for your reply. After I posted to you last night, I requested membership in the ASAN Meetup chapter in Rutherford. I'm awaiting their response. Supposedly, they are having their monthly meeting this weekend, Oct. 20th. They list 170 members. Even though it's 90 minutes away from me, I'm thinking about going. I have yet to physically lay eyes on another autistic person, and I really feel it would help mitigate my sense of being alien and alone if I had at least ONE Aspie friend with a shared interest or two. It would be nice if they were local, but at this point, the word "local" is becoming relative. At least, North Jersey is drivable. I also like the idea of being in a self-advocacy group.

Yes, Spike is hot! LOL He's not really *my* type, but he is by far the coolest and funniest of any vampire character I've ever seen. Did you follow the Angel spin-off, as well? I borrowed the Buffy DVDs from the local library and copied them all to my computer's hard drive, so I have all seven seasons. I even have the soundtrack to the musical episode on my iPod. I've watched the whole series beginning to end several times, but I go in fits and starts. It's been a couple of years since I watched them, so it's probably time for a refresher soon. ;)

I'm also a big Doctor Who fan. Did you see the pilot for that new show, The Witches of East End? I thought that was pretty good. How about Charmed? Did you watch that one, too? It was decent, though not as good as Buffy, IMO.

Are you aware of that ASAN meetup group? Are you a member?
Best-
Chariot

Hi Chariot,
No problem. I'd like to check that ASAN thing out. Is it for all ages? I don't care if I have an Aspie friend or a NT friend, I just want a friend! Especially one that loves Buffy! None of my friends are local. None of my good true friends anyway.

Spike really is funny!! I only watched two Angel episodes from season one because they had Buffy in them, otherwise I have not watched Angel. I have the Buffy musical episode soundtrack as well. I love that episode.

I've never watched Dr. Who. I really wanna watch Witches of East End. I shall check it out next week. I've never seen Charmed but I'm planning on watching it soon as well.

ah, to be aspie in NJ... what a bittersweet experience that is...

I'm 31 and live in Essex co. Services for adult aspies are practically nonexistent. Psychologists and social workers around here are surprisingly poorly versed on the subject. I've met a few very nice aspie from other states but never one from NJ. I moved from NY to Newark, NJ a few years ago for a superintendent job at a mixed residential/commercial building. To be frank these guys had lower requirements when it comes to certifications and experience and they were more than happy to hire me. I'm a very hard worker and multiskilled (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, renovation etc) I get a free apartment as part of my job so it makes things easier... less bills, less paperwork.... and best of all I don't have to commute to work, most days I work inside the building I live in.

The neighborhood itself is really rough, but since I hardly ever socially interact or do small talk with people around me it hasn't been a problem for me. I've come across a few people who act and speak like they have aspergers or high functioning autism but none of them seem to know it... or maybe they just don't talk about it... either way I'm too afraid to ask.. don't want to offend anyone.

It's nice to see there's other aspies in NJ on here :)

I'm 25 and I live in Passaic County. Nice to meet you, I'm Stephanie. I've met a few Aspies online from NJ but not from around where I love. I have heard Newark is very rough. I'm glad you're safe though. Sometimes it seems safer to stay away from people, but not necessarily healthier, lol! You seem to live a very simple lifestyle! You're lucky! I'm trying to move out because things would be more quiet, especially in my head. Again, nice meeting you!
