There was an article in MX today( a free newspaper given away at train stations), which suggested having the back carriage of each train designated the social carriage. Meaning if you are feeling social you can get in the back carriage and socialise all you want.
Apparently it is not for dating.
People have expressed fear about being harassed. The standard culture on trains is to keep to yourself. Having random people trying to start a conversation can creep some people out.
The train company said that they are happy to do it as long as it isn't forced on people.

What I am wondering is what do you think of this idea?

It sounds like it could also be useful for people traveling together who want to chat. It can be rather intrusive to have chatty people talking and laughing loudly near you on a crowded train when everyone else is being quiet and keeping to themselves.

So, maybe this is not just for getting talking to strangers, but also for groups of friends who want to be loud? In which case, that would be useful too.

People do chat with people they know on trains , the idea is not to make so much noise that the whole carriage can hear what you say.. Sometimes people are just way too loud.
So the social section would be good for the noisier commuters.

You wouldn't need to take the social carriage for a quiet chat with your friends.

Putting the effort to make Quiet Zones would be better! Carriages where talking isn't allowed at all, like they have on the Airport Express Train. No phones, no children, just people sitting there quietly! :D
