There is a guy in my neighborhood that I have been friendly with for the past year and a half.

His name is David.

Unfortunately I have been calling him John. Not once did he correct me. An oddity with neurotypicals I will never understand. If someone said my name wrong one time I would politely correct that person.

Is there any way to correct this awkward situation?

Next time you see him, say, "Hi, David!" Then, say, "I just learned that I have mistaken your name as 'John,' almost forever! Is there anything else I misstated?"

Then laugh with him.

Very funny. That is a good out.

I will try that. I am open to other suggestions.

Should I apologize?

Soo David... Why have you let me call you John for the last year and a half anyways? I figured you would have corrected me by now?

Don't say anything. Just stop using a first name. You're going to embarrass him by pointing out that he let you use the wrong name for so long without saying anything.

i think by him tolerating being called by another name, means he already sees you as a friend.

Just keep calling him John.

And if he calls you out on it, just tell him that he looks more like a John, and carry on.

Refuge in audacity all the way.
