Gaining (and retaining) followers on Twitter

Just...how?

One week: gained 3 new ones within 2 days

The next week(s): they slowly begin to drop away...

and it is not only the new followers who go astray. Twitterers who have been following me for quite a while have recently waved goodbye and flown elsewhere. I have also noticed that any change in activity is with each time I tweet.

Usually my tweets are intended to be humorous with the occasional subliminal "shade". The Twitterverse either loves them or is made sick by them-I prefer the first scenario. Could someone lend a few words of wisdom?

Idk maybe people just don't really understand what you're saying?

Also I just tweeted a lot about bands and stuff and then I made a fee funny ones that got a lot of retweets, but I lost more than I hundred followers when I wasn't active
