Hi all, I'm in a bit of a Dilemma at the minute. There is really only one person who I can get along with without too much strain in my class at university. She's a 40 something year old woman (I tend to get along with older people better than people my own age), and everything was fine until I realised she just may be the most prejudiced person on earth.

Here is a list of the things she has said:

1. Black people in Africa should be allowed to die because it would solve world hunger.

2. While two black men were approaching - "Look out, there are two n*****s coming, hold on tight to your stuff or they might steal them!"

3. She told me she saw a Chinese man standing watching pigeons and she wanted to shout at him because he was obviously planning to eat them (as Chinese people do, apparently).

4. Men should not be allowed to be single parents because they will just abuse the children

5. She's afraid to come into contact with gay people because she will get AIDS from them (after all, all gay people have AIDS)

6. Gay = Paedophile

7. Catholics are all dirty, they don't get washed or wear deodorant (I live in Northern Ireland, and she is Protestant)

I have told a few people who have suggested that she may have been joking, and I was unable to detect her joking because of my AS. However, I am usually able to tell when she is joking, and I'm fairly certain she was serious about 3-6.

As you can imagine I was pretty horrified when I heard all of these, so it seems like a no-brainer that if she is serious about the things that she says then I should avoid her at all costs. The problem is if I do I probably won't have any friends, and I'm afraid I will go back to feeling lonely like I did before I met her.

It would be interesting to hear some of your opinions on the matter.

Wow that does sound prejudice, is she really just joking around? I never get those jokes, I just pretend to laugh half the time so it looks like I know whats going on.

next time she drops one of these 'clangers' you could say something like: "tsk, you have the dryest humour of anyone i know!" and see how she reacts.

i wonder if she is doing it to try to get a reaction from you or that it is some kind of teasing.

This woman probably grew up in a monocultural Northern Ireland when the Troubles were in full flow.
This may explain the racist and sectarian outlook she may have.
She will learn to change because Ireland is changing...

People are such idiots. I don't think I could stand to be around someone like that. Do you have other friends away from university?

I know that pigeon is used sometimes.
Cats don't strike me as anywhere near
as good a source of meat, though I wouldn't
put it beyond an overcrowded culture taking
up such a source.

Yes, pigeon's quite tasty, I'm sure they're eaten in many countries, as they are in the UK by people with access to land where they can shoot. I've never knowingly tried cat, though it was rumoured the local Chinese takeaway would incorporate them into certain dishes; so maybe I have inadvertently eaten one. I'm sure there's a decent quantity of meat on the hind limbs.

I'm beginning to wonder if the problem lies with me. It seems to be a common occurrence that I make friends with someone who seems ok at first, but as I get to know them they start to annoy me to no end.

For instance, there's this girl in church who I befriended because we share common interests (movies, video games, etc), whose company I enjoyed at first. But as time went on she began to annoy me because she talks so much, and (perhaps unintentionally) prevents me from talking to anyone else. For example, the other day I was trying to have a private conversation with my sister about AS, and this girl comes over and interrupts us to talk to me about handbags, she kept going on and on and I was bored to tears.

I think this girl and the woman from university may have asperger's syndrome (not just because of what I have said above), which makes me think I shouldn't be angry at them since it isn't their fault, but sometimes I can't help but get annoyed.

Well I'll be damned. I never thought my ex-wife would have moved to Northern Ireland.

Shes a few bricks short of a load. A few sandwiches shy of a picnic. Her elevator doesnt go all the way to the top. When god was handing out brains, she thought he said trains and said "No thanks!"

But I digress. She sounds paranoid. Irrational. Ill-educated. Unworldly. racist, bigoted. And very rude.
