Do best friends have to be mutual?

...or can you call someone your best friend when they consider someone else their best friend?

the person you are closest to is your best friend even if they have a different best friend.

I agree. I think it's common for people to have different best friends.

I personally don't understand who would actually want to consider someone their 'best friend' without their the other person feeling as strongly...

Friendships where one person likes the other person more than the other person likes them often don't turn out as well as equal and mutual friendship...

I understand what the other's are saying though but still...

No they dont have to be mutual.

I dont really use the word much now. I have a couple of very close friends but i dont think i could pick one. When i was at school maybe - i knew my best friend wasn't my mutual best friend. But if you asked them to pick there closest friends then yeah i would be on there.

Didn't effect our friendship in any way i could depend on her and she has never let me down etc. But no it wasn't mutual, which made no difference and shouldn't be something that's important they will still count you as one of there closest friends
