I know this sounds silly maybe but I was wondering if anyone makes light of their own disability.
My family like to call autism awkwartism due to the awkward tendencies we have, that comes with autism.
It's not meant to cause offense, autism runs in my family and we try to make light of our differences.

I just try not to talk about it with most people. I figure I would rather have people just think I am weird. I think it makes me seem more interesting

I joke that I'm 'weird' and 'crazy' and 'mad', that's all.

For instance a friend said his mother considers herself 'not crazy, just with a few loose screws' and I said 'Well I'm just plain MAD' and other things like that.

Yes I and most people with our disability do suffer through issues but instead of focusing on the negative all the time sometimes it's good to make light of it.

We can also be quite eccentric, silly and goofy sometimes (I know I can be!).

wowiexist @ That's fair enough that you don't talk about it, i'd guess not everyone is comfortable of talking about these sort of things, especially with people they don't know. I like to think that people view me as different rather then let people I don't know very well, know the reasons why i'm different. It's good to appear "mysterious" to others.

Outrider@ 'not crazy, just with a few loose screws' Haha love it!

I agree! it sure is a good thing to make light of it, still sometimes grasping the concept of humor though lol.

Very true! with autism, comes great character.

Plus people don't seem to understand Asperger's very well. Some people even deny that it is even a thing. And some people if you said you were autistic they would deny that as well. So it really works out better all the way around not to say anything.

Ture people don't understand aspergers nor know that it varies, also if people have most of the traits, if they don't have them all 100 percent, it doesn't make people neurotypical but people do judge, from first appearances ect

AS isn't something to be ashamed off but due to other peoples ignorance, I can understand why sometimes it's best not to say anything. Some people are comfortable telling people about AS and educating others, like you I too prefer not to broadcast it. Apart from close family members and people on this forum, no one else knows about my AS and it took me a while to acknowledge it let alone talk about it.

Every day. It's necessary for my sanity, and my AS really does bring about some funny moments.

Sometimes the funniest of moments, that's what makes events memorable, or even give others inspiration for discussing comedy.
Only downside for me with AS, is that people get impatient if they try to explain something I haven't got the grasp off, besides understanding and communication being poor, besides that, daft moments happen all the time and at least it some cheers people up lol

I have more frustration with explaining to people when they don't understand me, but usually they think it is funny. Kind of like recently I was trying to explain to people I work with that you can't go back to your long-sleeve wardrobe after you have already switched to short sleeves, but they just didn't get it. They seemed to think it was funny though so I guess it was more my struggling to explain what I was trying to say.

wowiexist@ I'm sorry to hear that, I've experienced this myself and sometimes I give up trying to explain myself because if people pressurise me to explain myself, I get stressed.
That's the down side of having AS, neurotypicals treat us like we're stupid when we're not.

It is okay. Sometimes it can be stressful. There are instances when it is fun to explain my idea. I have had ideas at time in which everyone said I was crazy but then I turned out to be right. Sometimes looking at something from a different perspective is a good thing. So that can be an advantage to AS.

That's a good point, never thought of it that way.
Oh that reminds me,One thing that my mum has once said, is that those with AS sometimes point out things that others may not. People that may thought you were crazy, must've felt awkward once you were right about something.
Sometimes people judge what they don't understand. I myself personally, find it hard to explain my thoughts sometimes which is frustrating but once people finally get what I mean then it's not so bad.

See that is the good thing about being on this site. You can talk to other people who will understand you. Make a post about something ridiculous and someone on here will be like yeah I have always thought that too. Maybe you can make a new friend that you can talk to about ridiculous things. lol

Lol that would be good, would love to talk to people on here but I wanted to leave this site at one point, due to nasty posts being made as well as problems with trolls but Alex doesn't delete ppls accounts.
I don't know if others experience this but I sometimes feel as if no one understands me, neurotypicals or other aspies, have you ever felt like that?

Yeah you should stick around for a while. This site probably has some trolls and nasty people but pretty much any site does.
Sometimes I do feel like other people don't understand me, even other aspies. But I don't think that is true of everyone. I think maybe there are just instances that make me feel discouraged and I feel that way. Don't be discouraged though. Someone will understand you.

Good point but it did discourage me tbh.
Thanks but I hardly doubt it about someone will understand me, i'm in my mid 20's and I never found anyone that I can talk too long term or reach an understanding with or find like minded people, I doubt that will change.

Thanks for the positive message though :)
