I hear that line so many times. The most upsetting time I heard was when I tried to befriend a lady at my church and she said that to me. I was devastated because this woman acted like she wanted to be friend's for so long.

Have any of you ever had an experience of being rejected by a potential friend just because of age alone?

well assuming your not a 20 something year old hanging out with middle schoolers, I don't see the big deal. I think as long as your all over 18, the age rule kind of goes out the window. I even hung out with my roomates cousin a lot and he was still in highschool I was probably 19...but we hung out with his parents too...everyone was cool and it was just a bunch of stoner video-gamming geek's.

In fact I think it's generally acceptable for any highschoolers to mingle regardless of what class they are in. I've seen plenty of seniors date freshman and sophomores. And I dated a senior when I was a freshman....

Yeah it depends.

I am 38 and I'm "friends" with a 10 year old that walks his bike past my house and sells me candy bars sometimes. By "friends" I mean that I buy his stuff although I don't want to and I help him find his dog when it gets lost. I don't talk to him about my interests or drive him around in my car. That would be wrong.

The lady probably meant what she said kindly and it came out wrong. Maybe she was concerned that you were lonely and she isn't a good companion for you.
