Finding friends in the new city

I think it's quite a common problem so many people may have ideas - how to find friends in a new city where I'm attending college?
Obstacles:
- There are no clubs, groups or meetups that can interest me in 50 miles (western history, mainly military and political), I googled it all around.
- In college there are almost no clubs as well; I failed to create new one - administration doesn't like it, and other students don't seem to be interested as well.
- In college you basically have 15 minutes to go to another building and talk a little to classmates - not so much time, and after everybody has his own plans.

Beats me. The clubs here at school are quite lame as well, I can't believe anybody thinks that's a good way to meet people. Most are ethnic/religious clubs I'm not welcome in or professional ones I'm not welcome in, it's obvious the vast majority of students have no interest at all in them.

Yes. My college has clubs for future nurses, future paralegals, african-american club and half a dozen like the above. ANd there is almost no social life there - events are rare, mostly these are some lectures about some boring topics mad in the time when most of students either have classes or working somewhere else. So college is not a variant.

Are there any bars? I like to go and drink some beers and speak to random people sometimes.

I mainly don't drink, and in this area there are very few people with similar attitude as mine. I'm Conservative, and this is one of the most Liberal regions in the US where I have to be now. It can be a good bar fright but I'm not a big fan of it.

games/sports? also part time jobs if that is a factor.

I'm not fan of games (any more) or sports. I have part-time job as tutor at the same college where I'm obtaining second degree, nice job but lazy and stupid students, and low pay.

volunteer work?

I was volunteering for five years, and barely can remember how my colleagues looked like.

And here I just don't see any interesting opportunities now. They require either very far transportation, or some special skills, or expensive background checks and licenses (I wanted to volunteer for homeless and "difficult" teens), or just boring. I tried to go into political volunteering on recent elections but nobody of candidates was interested in my proposals and ideas.

What are your interest?

Also have you thought about trying books stores and coffee shops in the area? Sometimes you can meet people and strike up conversations there?

Also what is your major?

Believe me you will start meeting people and connecting. Things like that take time.

Politics and history are my main interests.

I tried to visit bookstores and coffee shops but you know, very few people are interested in history here, and politically the vast majority of people here has different sympathies than me.

My major is Political Science though in Pol Sci class only three people have this major as well - of them two socialists and one conservative girl with who I unsuccessfully tried to make some connection, she doesn't interested. The rest of students took this class just because they had to, and find it boring.

I think you will find friends. As long as you don't force the issue.

Forcing the issue will give you a reputation as somebody to avoid.

I should know: I used to force the issue--and I acquired that kind of reputation when I was in high school.

What I say is applicable to a college situation as well.

Why can't you join a Civil War reenactment group? So what if their politics is not exactly the same as yours. You have a common interest: a great interest in history. I only wish they were obsessed with the Northern War like you are!

I barely have money for living and education, and reenactment is a very costly thing.

I'm thinking: you could on forums devoted to history. Join them. Be amiable.

The people already on the forum could guide you to real-life events.

LOL....I know you have very strong, passionate interests--but, at first, don't be so passionate!

I cannot be not so passionate. I tried.

And about forums and so on - I do, but that is the wrong way. I have 700+ followers in Facebook but most of them are from northern NY, Texas, Florida and Rocky Mountains. Just a few are from NJ or Philly more or less near me.
