Basically, I have a few close friendships that I appreciate very much, but I really do have little in common with most of them outside of our mutual experiences with recovery from addiction.

I want to find some people to go to the cinema with, to talk about books with, to do some mountain hiking with. I honestly do not know where to start looking for these people, though.

I am not looking for further emotional support, as I get plenty of that from my 12-step friends. Just some companionship on fun and superficial levels involving shared hobbies, that's all.

You should look for an Autism support group in your area, you might find that they hold activities for members. Outside of that, I am not sure because I share the same difficulties.

I have the same difficulty so sorry this won't be too helpful. Prefer to do things with people rather than sit and talk. Unfortunately, most people like social activities that are sedentary, which only highlights my troubles.

You could try a book club or hiking club. In the past, I tried activities (clubs) that aligned more with my special interests but found people were too intense or good at the hobbies and I couldn't compete, or felt the odd person out because most of the people were super intellectual, or they were much older.

It doesn't hurt to try though. Hopefully you'll meet someone who not only shares your hobbies but someone you can also connect with.

I found a GLBTQ book club that I intend to join in the near-future. Also, I am trying to arrange a 4-player co-op couch group amongst my 12-stepper buddies for Borderlands 2 on the XBox One that will play through the game a few hours at a time.

Wish me luck on both of these things.

You could try Meetup. It seems to be a popular website to organize social events for various activities.

I've personally looked at various meetups in my area, but havent gone to one yet. I usually chicken out or something comes up.
