I wonder if there is any help possible for a low functioning autistic boy who lives next door.

He is about 10 or 11. He isn't nonverbal but he really doesn't have language. His mother will prompt him to say things, but you can tell he really doesn't know what it means. He cannot read, he can barely talk and he definitley can't walk down a street without his mothers help. Its as if he has no idea what is going on.

He seems totally locked in his own world. I believe friendship of any kind is impossible for him since he really can't have any kind of conversation.

Is there any way to help a kid like this? Can Lovaas do anything? His school has said he is "ret*d" and is fairly unhelpful/unproactive.

As you can probably tell, classic autism is way harder to help that Aspergers/HFA. Is any such help possible tho?
