This is something that's been on my mind. I wound up picking up a new hobby and keeping in touch with a couple people I met over it. However, beyond asking if someone is going to the usual event this weekend and if they want to meet there, or if they want to get something to eat before/after, I'm kind of clueless how to advance things and get to know people better.

I only vaguely remember the days of texting as a teenager, and that it was a lot more common and detailed than making plans. Others texted a lot more than I did, too. I don't know if I'm giving off the impression that I'm not all that interested because we don't "converse" over text, or if this is just one way friendships work when people get older and it all goes on face-to-face.

I know some people still text their friends silly things throughout the day. I'm not sure when/if that would be appropriate.

Thoughts/experiences?

That's pretty much how me and all my peers use our phones; just for making arrangements, really, and maybe the odd announcement that we want people to know straight away. Some of them use Facebook etc. as a bit more of a conversational thing, but that's not my thing.

I think as well, that as people get older, they settle into a lot of routines in life, and there are less social occasions. If you discuss everything as it happens, you can end up with not much to say when you meet face-to-face, because you've said it all already. I think you're doing just the right thing by arranging to eat together before meetings. Something like suggesting a meal together on a different night of the week, so that you can visit somewhere you normally wouldn't, might be a nice progression from there.
