Howzit fellow Aspies,

Just about every day, I experience growing evidence that I have A.S., and last week Friday was no exception. My workplace celebrated Spring Day with a "Lucky Legs" competition, though Spring Day was actually on Saturday. I had wondered if anybody had organised music for the competition, so I decided to put some Commodore 64 synthesized music together. I got the young lady who was organising everything to listen to my selections, and she gave them the green light.

But later, when I'd started playing the CD and I was waiting behind a black screen that was designed to show only the legs, and completely unaware of what was happening on the other side, somebody very rudely took my CD out, which was specifically marked as music for the competition, and put their own (rubbish) music on.

Now who do you think was more selfish? Myself or the person who switched my CD off? I don't believe I was being selfish at all, since my music had been given the green light. And the organiser, as well as my supervisor, both agreed that it wasn't a nice thing to do at all.

I was highly upset for most of the rest of the day to say the least. I had this feeling that absolutely nobody enjoyed my taste in music, but deep down I knew this wasn't true - my old supervisor has enjoyed a few of my Commodore 64 CDs so I gave the CD to her.

Please let me have your views on this situation?

Yes, they were rude to change music that "wasn't theirs" (it was the competition's, really). But, people have wildly differing musical tastes, so something that isn't terribly surprising that something not-mainstream got swapped out.

It seems that we're each operating under a different set of rules or meta-rules. (Example of a meta-rule: Whatever pisses off Dad next is strictly forbidden.) Some of us flaunt the rules to show the girls what bad boys we are. Sometimes, showing that "my" musical tastes are better than those of... someone further down "our" social hierarchy, and "I'm so cool I don't need anybody's permission," is just to impress the girls. I'm guessing it was the alpha of his social group.

I think you are reading too far into this. It sounds like the person simply didn't like the music so they switched the c.d. but I agree that they shouldn't have done it.

People should always at least ask before doing things like that. They can't assume that's the kind of music that everyone wants, and they should also consider how the person who put the 1st music in would feel. I can't stand people who do what Roy described.

The person who did it was just being a typical douche. I recommend you stand guard at the cd player next time Roy!

Hi nb411,

I don't know what you mean by "douche" - please explain that to me?

But yes, I will stand guard by the CD player next time! And if they dare to switch the CD off and put other music on, I'll whip out a wooden spoon and smack them on the top of their hand!

See slang uses here: Douche

The person who did it, obviously didn't think much of the CD or you, and didn't care. People do this. The only way to deal with it is to prevent it from happening by being there or making it explicitly clear to everyone through some formal means that it is not to be changed e.g. announcement over microphone or some such by the boss.
