Why do we expect negatives when we receive a label?
To a degree, because we're taught to expect negative things when we're not the same as everyone else.
I remember one of my teachers in Graphic Design used to be a nurse. She decided she wanted to do something else, but she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. So, she had an aptitude test.
The people who gave the test were whispering all worried like as they entered the room. They were really concerned about the results, they said.
Her mathmatical and a few other "academic" skills were extremely poor. They were hesitant and how to tell her. In the end, the mentioned in an offhand sort of way, "You're creativity and spacial scores were through the roof, but we're really worried about these math problems . . ."
So, she decided to smile at the testers, and became a graphic designer. Definately one of the best teachers I've had.
But, if she had simply given in to the "Oh, I'm really bad at math? Oh, I can't do this either?" She might not have expected much of herself.
