New Meetup for Aspies in San Diego area, ages 18 to 30

A new group for young adults with Asperger Syndrome has formed in North San Diego County. This is a social group for young adults 18-30 who have Asperger's Syndrome, although the group welcomes young adults with similar conditions, and/or their supportive family and friends. Some suggested activities are eating out, hanging out, and going out. Movies, board games, sightseeing, amusement parks ... you name it! The next activity is miniature golf in Vista on Sat. 1/26 at noon.

Why an age limit ? We're no longer aspie over 30 ? We no longer need a social support group over 30 ? Oh i see, those over 30 never had any support so they should continue like that eh ?

. ..As one of the forgotten "children" of the past before Asperger's Syndrome existed, now as adults, we are left to struggle on our own to survive and continue to fall throught the many "cracks" in a world that no longer cares about us.

What happens when you join a group with an 18-30 age limit and a few months later one turns age 31?

It is interesting that the one aspect of the new group that has invited your attention, and even invoked some self pity, is the age range. Everyone, Aspie or not, generally prefers to socialize with people in their own age group. To expect an 18 year old to enjoy hanging out with a 45 year old is not only unreasonable, it borders on questionable. I am a schoolteacher in my late 40's. If I were to approach a group of my students and say "Hey! How about we go to the mall on Saturday and hang out!" ... how many takers do you think I would get?

Thus, the line has to be drawn somewhere. There are geographic limitations as well. We would like everyone to be within 20 miles of each other, so that our activity locations are accessible to all members. Our group was never intended to be a catch-all, so I'm sorry if any aspect of it makes you feel excluded. My suggestion is for you to start your own group within your own area, for whatever age range you feel comfortable with. Good luck.
