a site i go on, has an element which has been dubbed the 'monothought clique' - its members can be easily identified as vigourously denying its existance :D

I also post on two music forums which are incredibly cliquey - as in 'don't bother starting a new topic unless you already have thousands of posts because nobody will respond'. Loads of in jokes. I have mates who write the reviews section of the site and they always try to introduce me to other posters at gigs - this does not tend to go well, they are always like 'do I know you?' *gives withering look*.

So in other words, yes.

Yes I am a classic lurker, I've lurked on more forums than I've ever posted to. With that experience alone I say internet cliques sometimes can be more exclusionary than their 'IRL' counterparts. I always find it impossible to pick up the social current on most forums. Though, I don't think WP is that cliquey and I've lurked lots ;) I post occasionally on a few music forums and a political one, and they're way more groupish and all that crap. It's kind of everywhere though, if it's active forum there's probably some kind of clique no matter how minor.
