I haven't paid it much thought before, but I've a bunch of people who have told me flat-out lies, usually relating to my interests.

When I was five, I had a friend lie to me about seeing a new Thomas the Tank Engine video that I hadn't seen.

When I was seven, my cousin made up stories about Mario games, including a new game that was coming out (which I called him out on for a factual discrepancy, although eventually I caved).

When I was twelve, I had a friend who had told me about an exclusive Star Wars CD, a trailer for this really outrageous movie that didn't actually exist, and a cutaway lightsaber prop (the last of which I called him out on eventually).

I've had a friend for several years who has told me some Star Wars-related myths and as recently as a few years ago told me about an "exclusive" demo he saw for Nintendo DS (which I was quick to point out was not true, although for some reason I tried to rationalize it to justify that he wasn't telling me the whole truth).

Is there a reason people have acted like this to me? Do lots of people do this, or have I always been just enough of a loser for them to get away with lying to me? :?

yeah, they see that you're 'easy target', and try to get you going. Run into the same thing meself; unfortunately a few decades of that makes you a bit cynical...

If friends lie to you they aren't worthy of your company.

I think they do it because they realize they CAN. :(

As an adult, I too am very cynical, to the point (some would argue) of being paranoid and overly defensive.

But time and again, I discover that people I've suspected of not being honest with me REALLY WEREN'T BEING HONEST WITH ME.

So I tend to trust my instincts now. I've had too many people straight out lie to me, with smiles on their faces, with pleasant, reassuring voices.

I don't want to think the worst of people. I am just very...cautious. I've learned it's necessary to be this way, to help protect myself from those who would take advantage of me.

Many times people tell you thoughts they can not defend.
just to win you over and get to know you they may try and impress you with things that are not true,
other times they just lie to not let them selves feel so dumb,
other times its something they see as a way to take advantage of you,
others just do it just to see if they can,
and yet others are just compulsive.
