I think I might have made an accidental insult...

I was walking to a class and I saw a girl then I looked away and I heard her say "hey" and I didn't hear anyone else say it so I think she may have been saying it to me in which case I ignored her which I'm sure upset her alot as it would me too... Well I just wanted to tell somebody so I came here nothing I can do really as I don't really know her but she does stay in the same dorm ah well not the first screw up I've made maybe I'll get lucky and she'll try when I'm paying attention or maybe she wasn't talking to me which is a bitter sweet thing but better than having not said anything at all.

You could always ask her. If she is in the dorm, one time when she is passing by you alone you could say something like "hey, did you say hi to me the other day?" If she answers yes, you can explain. If not, you could fein ignorance that you thought she was someone else. Either way, it is a no loose situation and if she did feel let down it can make her feel a bunch better and maybe even call you by name or something next time.

Well I rarely if ever interact with the other people there and most that I know don't say anything to me and I don't know her at all... Thanks for the advice but under my circumstances I think that would only seem odd... I could just chat with her if I see her around and act like it didn't happen at all b/c honestly I don't know if it did or not...

That scenario sounds very familiar. Been a long time since I've been in school, but I remember so many times wondering what the right response was, and ending up doing nothing. I always hoped people wanted to get to know me, but always seemed safer to assume they didn't. Not at all sure that was the right thing to do, but I probably would have made a bad impression anyway; difficult to know how to approach people without upsetting them.

the simple thing to do is , when you see her , take a deep breath, and say hey

if she ignored you , then call it even , and you won't feel guilt about it anymore

if she talked to you , talk back but with small words and a lot of nods

then after 30 seconds , excuse yourself because you have an appointment somewhere else

that is how it is done theoretically , I have never done it, but I believe that is how an NT would do it

wish you luck, bro

I probably won't do anything partly b/c I'm nervous and partly b/c I never see her face to face and that was the only time I've ever even passed by her...

The worst thing that can happen is you make a new friend out of a mistake. It happened to me. With my prosopagnosia, I thought I knew this guy from before and that I should be polite and say hello nicely, so I gave him a broad, warm smile and hello when I ran into him on the stairs at work. Turns out we'd never met!! ! But he returned my greeting with equal enthusiasm so as not to embarrass me, and he ended up feeling so flattered and happy to be greeted so nicely by a stranger that we became closer. He never discovered I had made a mistake. We were friends for the duration of his stay here (he was an American diplomat) and once he came to visit and we met for dinner with my now ex husband too. Unfortunately, my ex husband got jealous and made him feel it, so he never contacted me again. But it was a lovely friendship while it lasted. Born from a prosopagnosia mistake, hahaha.

So next time you see this girl give her a warm, broad, innocent smile and a hello. Nobody can resist the power of niceness anyway.

what i'd do is pretend it never happened and be warm and welcoming the next time you run into her. if she did in fact say "hey" then she'd probably realize you just didn't hear her and think nothing of it.

I don't think you upset her. If I were in her shoes I think I'd find it a little strange that you didn't return my hello. My advice is not to worry about it. I think that you may be over-thinking the situation, somthing that I am very guilty of myself.
