Maybe both. I prefer principle, what made me unpopular, I defended a girl in my class who got bullied. That made people dislike me, but I realize I don't need that sort of people. It depends on what your principles are. If they're really anti-social, it may be an explanation. Or when they are teh opposite of most people's principles. I put my principles first. I think that's the right way to live as a person.

It can be that you simply spoken have no friends, or very few, and relate it then to your principles. I'm in high school, and I know it's sometimes really hard. So it totaly depends on what these principles are.
