maybe there is some sort of compromise, i assume that as their dogs are still living in the flat that it is someway inhabitable, maybe they could live with you part of the week and at their home the rest of the week, i am not sure that arranging a long term living arrangement would be suitable for any of you though, they may become to depend on you too much, also i have to say something that may be a little controversial. please do not be offended. are you sure they are on the spectrum? i only ask because of something that happened to me.
not too long ago when i thought i was older and wiser somebody got through my net and became a friend because they convinced me they were on the spectrum, but it later turned out that he just wanted to go to bed with my wife and i and was not a friend at all, there are some really strange people out there who will try anything if it gets them what they want, i am not saying this is the case with these friends of yours ,i am just asking you to be careful,
