Has anyone ever noticed that groups of teenage girls will say anything while walking past a stranger? It's as if they don't realize (or don't care) that they are easily within earshot. They only seem to do this while in groups and it seems to be a highschool/college girl thing.

Recent Example: My 12th-grade sister had some friends over at our house to work on a school project. I came home from work said "Hi" and went about my business getting something to eat, etc. I didn't say anything more to them at that point because I didn't want to interfere with what they were doing and in all likelihood I'd never see them again so no point in getting to know them. Besides, I didn't like having conversations with HS girls even when I was in high school. They were super-giggly around me and talked about me as if I were in the other room. Long story short, they quite vocally stated that they thought I was attractive. I'm not bragging- in fact this kind of thing annoys me because I value my personality a hell of a lot more than (what I think are) average looks. After awhile, I interjected with an, "I can hear you ya know." They seemed genuinely surprised that I could hear them. Christ, they were ten feet away and were talking at a normal volume! I hate it when people do this. When I am in a room with someone, I prefer that they talk to me, not about me.

Another random example: A new part-time co-worker walked past the break room where I was relaxing with a book and remarked to the girl she was with, "Is he reading?" in a disgusted tone like it was unusual or something. I wanted to say "Got a problem with it?" but settled for an indifferent, "You should try it sometime". Once again, high school girl, talking loudly as if I wasn't in earshot and seemingly not caring that I was. As a side-note, only in America will somebody criticize you for (gasp!) reading (! !!) in a deserted break room on your lunch. Since when did books become evil?

Can anyone shed some like on this NT phenomena? I certainly do not understand it. Are they oblivious? Self-centered? Or am I alone in this observation...

Teenagers, girls being no exception, tend to be jerks. It's really that simple. Social mannerisms just don't seem worth the effort, all too often. In the first example, since the comments were (in their mind) complimentary, they likely made no effort to conceal them. In fact, they may have WANTED you to hear. Take that as you will.

In the second example, well, teenagers are jerks. And, all too often, anti-intellectual. All you can do is shrug your shoulders and hope they enjoy their career at Dairy Queen.

In my hometown in Upstate New York, a 42-year old man was just released from state prison after serving 20 years for the rape
and murder of a 16-year girl, a crime he did NOT commit back in 1985. (The new DNA technology finally won his freedom.)

The girl was an attractive blond, a Cheerleader and very popular. So, who is the guy that she giggled and "flirted" with that raped and murdered her? This tragedy has destroyed TWO lives...

It's odd, NT people do this. Yes, I have noticed it already long ago. When I was 11, I had a NT friend, and she would start saying all sorts of personal things out loud and in public! She didn't seem to have the idea it wasn't appropiate. As she was talking on, I had to shut her up. I notice this strange (at least, when you ask me, it's irrational, but common, so maybe not that strange after all) behavior a lot, when teenagers are discussing everything on the school hallway without even thinking of the fact they might say things they don't want the others to know.

I never understood this; I guess they aren't conscious of what they're doing. Maybe they don't care, or maybe they want secretly people to know and get attention or becoming seen as ''cool''. I have no idea, to be honest. I notice it a lot, also on pavements, public buildings etc.

I sometimes wonder if the only reason the so-called "Neurotypicals" are in charge is because they socialise better than the rest of us.
