I was talking to my mother a while back, and basically, the conversation ended up at this:

Quote:
Every single native person I've met drinks. You know, one of them told me that they're raised to milk white people for all their worth whenever their in contact with one. They're quiet people you know...except when they drink.

I called her on it, saying that I knew a native guy in my class that was outgoing and loud, and swore never to drink. She answered it like:

Quote:
I'm not generalizing! I just think that native people are bad when they drink!

And she got all offended that I didn't share the same viewpoints on it as she did.

My question is, what does this MEAN? How do I answer something like this? I'm not sure what to say because it's completely contradictory in every single way. Do I just say nothing? Do I defend my opinion even if it DOES offend her? What do I do? :?

She seems to think that I'm naive or something for not having the same opinions on things as she does. How do I deal with this situation? What's the right thing to do?

Some people just tend to get offended when you disagree with them. My mum's the same, it drives me insane!

Lots of experience in that field. ^^
Make a wavelike motion with your hand (the back of your hand towards her), turn you head from her and walk away. That is a way to say that you don't agree but won't argue with her anymore.

She's offended becouse her (or all peoples really) prejudicm is a corner stone in her life. People lives inside small boxes, and don't like then light from the outside finds its way in. Don't worry, they normaly stop saying things like that when they learn that you won't let it pass. :P

It's all summed up in my signature. ;)

Silvervarg, I like that quote in your signature, very true from my experience!

"I'm not generalizing!" is an obvious lie. But she's lying to herself as much as to you. You just have to face the fact that your mom is a bigot and ignore her hand-waving defenses. Take her to task on the point of the conversation, not on her weak defenses.

When she says she's not generalizing, remind her that she just said something quite racist in a very general way. Also remind her of the people of her own race that are raised to milk anyone, regardless of race, for all they're worth. It's called business.

My mum is like this too. She likes to generalise about Indians, and I'm half Indian. I don't say that she is a bigot or racist but that she has four Indian children in a disgusted way so she shuts up.

Just tell your mum that you don't agree with her opinion.

with people who have no logic. If you were to break down her argument into a formula, there would be a gap of logic.
A- all native people are always quiet
B-all native people drink
Therefore, all loud native people must be drunk

Neither statement is true because it's notoriously difficulty to find a true statement that includes an absolute term. Social stories, for example, recognize our need for logic and therefore are supposed to avoid absolute terms.

Now, take the all out of it and replace it with some
A- Some native people are quiet most of the time
B- Some native people drink
Therefore, some loud native people may be drunk

This argument is much more logical. But then, take out the qualifier native and the argument becomes more logical still!
A- Native people are human beings
B- Some human beings tend to be quiet
C- Some human beings drink
D- Some human beings who drink may become louder than they would normally be when sober
Therefore, some human beings who are loud may be drunk and this happens irregardless of race or nationality

However, most people ruled by emotion and prejudice tend to be impervious to logical arguments (notice I left out absolutes) LOL.
