"how ya doing" might be a nice ice breaker. Maybe start a conversation, if that's what you are looking for. There are some simple questions to ask if you want to make conversation. "How was your weekend", "What did you think of Obama's inauguration speech" are just a couple.
You are new, and everyone will likely know you are doing work experience, so I would tend to think that everyone is going to go out of their way to make you a little more comfortable to be there.
Also, because you are new, ask questions and let others talk about themselves so that you can get an idea of who everyone is and what they do. You will learn more if you listen, rather than talk.
