Like the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.?

Well, I wasn't a member of any those, but the only thing I like about the YMCA is their indoor swimming pools.

I was a Brownie when I was 7. Hmmmm....some of it is coming back to me....

I have a vague memory of meeting in a room with a dark, wooden floor, and that one of the other girls was named Valerie, and had long, shiny, smooth, dark hair. Dues were 10 cents, and we drank Kool-Aid. And we got to wear uniforms. My Brownie handbook had an orange cover, and had a page about the joys of collecting pinecones and acorns. Also inside was a drawing of two little girls. One was the good girl, like a Brownie should be. Her room was meticulously tidy, and she smiles as she put her neatly folded blouses into her drawer. The other was the bad girl, and she scowled while shoving a wadded up blouse into her drawer. There were toys and dirty socks strewn across her room. I remember trying real hard to be like the "good" Brownie, but it didn't last.

I liked Brownies all right, but for some reason, never moved up to regular Girl Scouts. I don't remember why.

That was the only "organization" I ever belonged to.

I was in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. I also went to the Smiths Falls and District Club for Youth (SFDCY) in which I ended up volunteering for when I was an adult.

SFDCY is associated with Town Youth Participation Stratigies (TYPS) and I will be helping out at the upcoming TYPS annual conference this weekend.

i was part of the girl scouts until i was like 14. i stopped going because my new troop leader was a little strict.
i had some really great and not so great times in scouts. a lot of learning experience though. i learned that faking you have diabetes is not a good thing(long story).

i noticed as i got older that socializing became harder and harder in scouts. it got to the point where people were suprised when i acted out and was silly. very annoying.

i was also in a youth group at my church. we'd start the meeting with some talk and talk and maybe a anecdote about jesus and loving people. after that we'd sit around eating chips and dips, peanuts, and cold pizza mini pocket things. i'd normally go to the back of the room and play poker. not as exciting as it sounds.

I was an avid member of Brownies for 3 years and Girl Guides for a year and a half. It was my focus during this time an I always looked forward to it. I loved the sense of order it had: the rituals, insignia, badges, uniforms etc.

The only reason I quit was because I was relentlessly bullied by two of the other Guides. :'( I couldn't stand that an organization bent on cooperation and girls being nice to one another could allow girls to be catty and mean...I don't think the Guide leaders did anything about it either.

I was in Cub Scouts for a few years, then Boy Scouts for maybe two years (then I lost interest.) Also took swimming lessons at the Y.

The most influential youth organization for me was drum & bugle corps - an absolutely perfect fit! It was all about music and precision - and nobody cared how popular you were. It was (and still is today) a complete meritocracy - the better you were & the harder you worked, the more you were respected by your fellow members.
