Wrong Planet is busy error message

I am getting this message a lot lately :-

Wrong Planet is currently experiencing a high amount of traffic.

We should be back in 2 to 3 minutes or less.

Also, when I get into WP, pages seem to take a long time to load.

BS, your suckage at using mysql is the problem, it happens at 11p MST every single day, you just changed it from the old error to the new one so you wouldn't look like the dunce you are. By the way, it didn't work.

This is just a thought, maybe this is a dumb idea, but moving some forums to member only section like the random forum for example, would that help to decrease the traffic a little in order to not get that error for the time being?

I came into this forum room to start a thread about this, but this one will do.

I'm generally not one to complain, but the frequent short site outages are messing with the flow of my qi, which is not a good thing for Icarus's state of mind or spirit.

Can we start a fund for a second server? Mabye toss a "Funds for second server" meter at the top of the site page like Wikipedia does? How much are we talking here?

(This site is run off of just one server?

just a thought [possibly crap,don't know enough about it]....but would it be possible for supportive users to act as "supernodes" for wrong planet in the same way it works for peer to peer programs?

after spending the entire weekend and most of today working on this issue, I think I have been able to optimize the site, the databases, and the database queries in such a way that this won't happen anymore.

The database is run off of just one server but that server is a dual core machine running FreeBSD so it's very stable and fast.

However, all of the connection problems were the result of too many people posting at the same time which had been causing database deadlocks. I switched the users, posts, topics, and forums tables to a more robust table storage engine (innodb instead of MyISAM) and there have been no more deadlocks (that i've witnessed) since the conversion. The conversion occurred sometime this afternoon.

If the deadlocks persist, I will further optimize the queries that have been causing them (which will only affect forum statistics listed under the "number of views" etc columns.)

As of thursday or friday, all images (except for most of the avatars) are now being served from one of 11+ internationally based data centers so the main server no longer needs to deal with those. You are automatically connected to the datacenter closest to you (for instance, australian users download from australia, UK users download from london, asian users download from tokyo, west coast users download from california, canadians download from either canada or usa depending on which center they're closer to, etc).

This should mainly benefit international and non east coast USA members. And members won't even notice that this is happening (aside from everything happening faster). The process is seamless and robust.

I notice none of those silly mysql errors today so the change seems to have done a lot of good.
