Not everyone lives above the poverty line here, in fact an extreme 17% of the population is below it (those on benefits and the lowest paying jobs tend to be). This compared to socially democratic countries like Norway and Denmark (who dont have a class system, the rich will talk to the poorer) have nobody below that line. There are also homeless people all over Britain. Cambridge happens to be one of the wealthier areas so you might not see them but i have. We might be more socially responsible when compared to the US but we still have a long ways to go.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE LESS OF A CLASS SYSTEM??? YOUR COUNTRY IS THE ONE WITH THE MONARCHY AND NOBLES!! ! Do you really believe that you can wish away 1000+ years of aristocracy by tapping your heels together???

Well first of all youll notice im not for class sytems and im not voting for right-wing parties that exacerbate the problem by being for the rich man all the time. Yes Britain has a shameful past of class divide and the yanks are continuing that legacy while we (thanks to left-wing labour governments of the past) are at least guarenteeing everyone a free health care system and benefits for those who dont have work.

You have in part your history of a British and British controlled background to blame for your arrogance as a nation and as individuals and your class system. You should notice that in Britain there isnt as big a gulf between rich and poor and ours isnt as devided along colour lines as yours is.

Social security also stops us having as much homeless people as the US and most of our officially homeless actually stay in hostels or some other temporary accomadation. If you look carefully i wasnt boasting about the system here (though it is a lot more humane than yours) but pointing out that countries with no class system and have a social democracy have an infanetely superior system than that of both of us and to be fair the left wing labour governments of the past brought in these ideas and the people with foresight in these countries modelled those ideas.

The US however doesnt have anything to feel but shame over their lack of scruples when it comes to how you treat the poor and under George Bush there has been more outright greed and class devision than there has been for a long time.

IMO Robert N can be a bit ideological and rough around the edges in his debates but he has one thing you and your government are sorely lacking in. A social conscience.

I never even said that. I posted that we are a bit more socially responsible to the poor than the USA who expect them to fight for the army, work for buttons or die. I believe that we do have a too much of a class system but i believe the US is even worse for class devide (the colour of most of the poor being less than bright white being a factor imo). Id like to see an end to the aristocracy, titles and the royal family here because i think this makes a mockery of what it is to be a true democracy. Organisations like the Freemasons should have to declare their membership and purpose if it isnt to further each other at a cost to true democracy.

i make a short answer:

because they want to SEE the difference between them (rich and believing in god)
and the poor and not believing or believing to the wrong god(s)

god rewards the believers and punishes the not believers.
so why give them money?

My middle class background should have no bearing on my political ideas, Sean.

Some of the greatest socialists in history have come from middle class or aristocratic backgrounds. George Orwell was one, and Tony Benn (Labour Party) was another. Tony Benn used to have a Title: Lord Anthony Wedgewood Benn, but he renounced his Title and changed his name to Tony Benn in keeping with his socialist beliefs.

I as a Christian do not oppose civilised society, even God does not oppose civilised society.

For it is better for us all in this world, to be civil to each other in this world.

No , id rather quote what is relevent to the point im making at the time. Im sure "that was for RobertN" = a terribly funny joke to you but in all seriousness if you come onto a public forum and debate you need to be prepared for anyone to read and reply to your posts (particularly if you say something amusing). Otherwise get a few mates together on an IM and debate in private.
