A little over 5 years ago, I was in a bad place in my life. My job was not working out and the only girl I had a serious relationship with broke it off with me and got engaged to soemone else within 3 months. At this time I was not diagnosed with AS. I needed help, so I got up the nerve to go to a psycologist.
At the first session, I told her everying I thought was I had in issue with, how I could not realte to some people, ect. She looks right at me and says. "I don't know what I can do to help you." Her exact words.
I walked out and never went back.
I just was wondering if anyone on here had something like this happen?

I would think that a good psychologist would be able to help you. Maybe you should try finding someone else. I know when I've had problems in the past due to AS and various other things, I've always gone to a councillor first. They've been a bit more helpful. :)

I have had a number of therapists say similar things to me. I usually try to get them to say it on the phone interview so I don't have to waste my money. But I have had at least 3 do that. One said I didn't have to pay and then sent me a bill :(

I think I'd rather have a psychologist tell me they can't help me, than have one tell me something really ridiculous.

I had a therapist fixate on my self-medication habits and referred me to drug rehab after one session. She was pretty harsh about it, too. She didn't care why I was self-medicating (undiagnosed AS, plus years of torment because of it, along with other kinds of abuse), she didn't look at anything else going on in my life. All she did was zero in on that one issue and treat me like a total junkie because of it.

Funny thing is, now that I know what's been going on all these years, I don't feel the need to self-medicate as strongly as I did before

My only experience with a shrink was him not knowing how to help me for several years but still pretending all the while I was getting worse emotionally, thats part of the reason why I dont see one now even though I know I need it.

I have gone to the same psychologist for 8 years and she has worked out really well. I think that psychologist shouldn't have said that. It was too blunt. In reality, a psychologist cannot cure AS. They can help with it, but that can take years. You can't spend a few months with one and be perfectly normal. I would say try another one.

I think I'd appreciate that honesty. A lot of them will just leech off of you week after week, even though they honestly don't know what to do to help you.

My brother hopes to become a psychologist (a research psychologist, not a clinical psychologist), but he has called me, quote, "flippin' nuts" endquote.

He was right. I took a jar of peanuts and began flipping that container from one end to the other as if the concepts of Up and Down didn't even exist!

A good psychologist helps you see how to go about helping yourself.
