can you people tell me something (and don't lie)?

Look, why does this society seem to VALUE negative characteristics in people, such as dishonesty, selfishness, egoism, apathy, stupidity, group think, while SCORNING people who speak of positive values such as honesty, loyalty, selflessness, integrity, respect, determination, drive, intelligence, and individuality? Don't make it an AS/NT thing because it ISN'T. Why do so many people, including many but not all of the people here, so strongly believe that a cohesive and tolerant, functioning society is evil, or that dysfunction is "normal" and should be valued? I want an honest answer. Don't say "because ignorance feels good", a crack head is still a crack head no matter how the crack makes him feel.
I think it has something to do with "you hide my skeleton I'll hide your skeleton" phenomena of modern society.
The only common factor I've ever seen in each and every person who either held these values, codefended/depended these values, or sought to initiate these actions in others, was....
That they had done something 'wrong
that they either wanted to hide by utilizing the skeleton rule above or by seeking to create more like minded individuals (Irony) so they would not be ALONE in what they do wrong.
My take anyways.

The "old ways" valued homophobia and racism, don't tell me you've forgotten this?
I think that people have to have an outlet, for reasons that change from person to person people just need to explode at somebody. Unless they have some other outlet like art, meditation or some other way to deal with it.
This topic isn't even about homophobia and racism, so I have no idea why you brought it up.
But there was a time when intelligence, respect etc. were valued.
Sorry I guess I took your comment as supporting the "Old Ways". This summer heat is really getting to me, making me see things that aren't there.

Even then, some artists are ignorant, many of these loons in this new age movement are just as bad as fundies really, the "liberalist extreme", which is nothing more really than self delusions that they adhere to in order to fit into a group. This is why I don't associate with any groups, because no group is perfect, and neither am i or anyone else, but I am conscious enough to learn from the mistakes and errors of others..... People accept flawed ideologies to live their life by without giving it any critical thought, in order to fit in because they are scared of individuality. That is where a lot of the problem lies.
Ignorance does not equal violence and being a part of the New Age movement does not mean you're an artist.
Yes but interacting with a lot of different groups can help you have a better understanding of both sides of an arguement, and help understand the world around you.

Well society will never say they value "dishonesty, selfishness, egoism, apathy, stupidity, group think." Society doesn't value stupidity, it's just intelligent people are out casted in a way. Most people use dishonesty and egoism to get ahead in society in the sense of becoming financially successful, and that is valued in society. Group think is valued since they don't want to be contradicted as they believe they are the majority and have more power. There are also too many intolerant people in the world who can't realize that others don't think the way they do. Also, because of the way society already is, it is very hard to change it and most people get sucked in thinking the way society wants.
Some of those positive traits are valued but people who display those characteristics are vulnerable and there will always be people who are selfish and take advantage of those people. To society, it seems that having virtuous traits will only hurt you in return and that also leads people towards being negative.
I don't think ignorance feels good and never have.
I don't believe that "a cohesive and tolerant, functioning society is evil" but do realize many faults with society. I may complain a lot about the way society is but I firmly believe it will always be better than anarchy. I personally don't get the impression that many people feel the way you expressed in the last three sentences. People may be bored with their lives and seek to be unique but I don't see many people believing "dysfunction is 'normal.'"

People won't openly say they think dysfunction is normal, but their actions speak louder than their words. Denial is an ego-defense mechanism, and much of this negative behavior DOES feel good to them, sub-consciously. It's like the new crack cocaine. I think it all boils down to brainwashing, where we're headed, if you've ever seen George Orwell's 1984 you'll get it

It really is, it's that simple, yet so many people have to be sheep and be brainwashed. It's quite sad really. On the brighter side a few more people just are beginning to wake up these days. A few sentient-thinking **individuals** are beginning to poke through now, that's something to put a smile on my face:)
