Hello everyone, I just joined today. I am not sure if I have asperger's or not, and I was wondering if there was a way to find out if I had it that didn't involve actively seeking professionals and recounting my life story, just because I don't like getting too personal. I also wouldn't like anything to go on an official record unless I wanted it to, if that makes sense. I heard online tests were unreliable. Sorry to have such an involved first post, but I figured I should just get it out in the open.

There is an online, I don't have a link, which has been very effective in the past. Still, I understand why you wouldn't trust an online test.
The tricky thing about AS is it varies so much.

Try having a look at some videos on you tube. That helped me understand it.

read the articles here. There's a couple of quicky tests here in the forums that may indicate a tendency, but an actual diagnosis would be the clincher.

I always thought it would be better once I was diagnosed, and that's really not the case.
The main reason that I wanted a legitimate diagnosis was that I thought it would look good as a struggle that I overcame...
College apps love that stuff.

Thanks everyone! I guess the thing that I am most confused about is the issue of not fitting in in elementary school and onward. I first realized I was not average in kindergarden, but I never thought of it in a negative way. I was never bullied, and most people are bullied, so I always thought that was strange. It could have been that I didn't care to fit in or anything, but people were always friendly with me, even though I could've cared less to know them. It might have been because I am a twin, and most kids think twins are cool.

It just seems the issue of social acceptance is the most important in asperger's (or that's what I have heard), and I never cared to fit in or care about most people's problems, but I do a good job of faking it.

Self-diagnosis is a tricky thing. There's a lot of overlap between AS, other ASDs and non-ASD conditions. Some people have more than one thing going on--such as depression/anxiety stacked on top of AS. It affects every person differently, and there's no one-size-fits-all criteria that will tell you 'yes' or 'no' with absolute certainty. Use caution in however you choose to go about it.

A resource that was a big help to me in understanding the effects of AS in adults is a book by Dr. Juanita Lovett called "Solutions For Adults With Asperger's Syndrome". In my case, I found a lot of answers to long-unanswered questions by reading this. There's no guarantee it would do the same for you, but if you find a copy at a library or bookstore, give it a try.
