Death penalty makes criminals commit more violent crimes? Think about that for a minute and get back to me. Try to put logic before ideology.
so then what about the innocent people killed under the death penalty? an "whoops! sorry" from the government and that's it? maybe set up the family for life (cause we can afford to have people be supported by the government their entire lives).
there are numbers that say the death penalty works to some extent in deterring crime but it's at a very big cost and there's better methods of lower crime rates (like improving education and working to get better employment opportunities in the areas).
Griff, you must not make threats against other members, directly, indirectly, inferred or implied.

I consider the unneccessary execution of criminals to be a violent crime. For those that can't ever be reformed there's always Supermax prisons where you can neither harm nor be harmed.
Not true. You should watch Lockup on TV. They kill other inmates and the guards. You wanna volunteer to be a prison guard and take care of these people who will stab you to death if they get a chance?
If the death penalty prevented violent crime the US and China would have the lowest violent crime rate in the world and we don't.[/quote]
Not true because there are other factors involved such as the type of citizens in each country, general morality, whether people fear God, and what they are taught in school, at home, and in the media. There are so many factors involved that changing just one at a time wouldn't make a noticeable difference. The main thing is hardly any actually gets executed for committing a crime. If everyone who committed murder was quickly tried and publically executed immediately after the trial, I'm sure the homicide rate would be much lower and less innocent people would die.
Not in Supermax they don't...at least not with any frequency approaching a normal maximum security prison.
If it's so complicated you can't narrow it down to any one factor, why do you claim one factor (the death penalty) reduces violent crime?
That viewpoint is so naive it's almost adorable. You think less innocent people would die if we got rid of appeals and executed people after the trial? I think you're forgetting the thousands of sentences that are overturned on appeal every year. Trials can be flawed, other people can confess, and new evidence can be found. Unless you also have the power to resurrect criminals who later turned out to be innocent, it's a really stupid idea.
As for public executions, I'm not interested in turning my country into Iran, thanks. Public punishments never stopped crime anyway.
A good question, and another question is When did it started to be considered a sin? Judas is an example of the belief that taking your own life is sinful, so probably at the time no matter what was the reason, it was always sinful, a time with no knowledge about mental conditions and disorders, when lots of them were considered demonic possesions. Suicide from clinical depression for example, where would that fit in a time with lack of knowledge and discoveries about these things?
Of course suicide bombers, that's another thing.

There are multiple factors involved and all of them should be addressed. It's common sense that harsher penalties reduce the likelihood of people committing crimes and I think it's been studied hundreds of times in other contexts.

There are multiple factors involved. Fixing one of them will reduce crime but obviously won't completely get rid of it. To clarify my earlier point, I think they should only execute when it's certain. There should be at least two reliable eye witnesses.
That was in the 1500's under Pope Paul 3rd in Italy. I would say that she didn't commit a sin in that case. Suicide can be a sin, but not always. Jesus in a sense committed suicide; He willingly gave up His life as the Sacrifice. But people just willy-nilly deciding to puff out their life, that's wrong.
don't try and act all high and mighty telling people they are wrong for doing what they did
one of the dearest people I know committed suicide, and I'll never think any less of her-but I refuse to see her and others be bad mouthed by people who think they have all the answers
you don't even know God exists
no one does
we just have a book that a bunch of humans wrote
thank you MissConstrue, nice to know someone is on my side
its not the first time I've had to go into a rant like this
people think they are all so knowing they get to say things and I have to live wit it
or they think they are so good they can say what they think God things
or claim they don't need proof for his/her existence
suicide isn't something to merely cast aside as
h its they're fault"
what kind of heartless bastards are you ![]()
If making such a rash and shallow judgment upon another human being on such a horrific and emotional ordeal as suicide isn't morally wrong, then I don't know what is. I will never commit suicide, but I will also never challenge someone's moral fortitude or label them as a sinner for doing so. I don't know what these people went through, and neither does anyone else.
