There have been a lot of different pronunciations of Latin throughout its history.

In the Middle Ages, the way the Romans spoke it was mostly forgotten and the form of Latin preserved as an international vehicle of culture developed many regional pronunciations, more or less influenced by the local vernacular. The most divergent was probably the English one, which is also the way most Latin borrowings are pronounced in modern English. All of these pronunciations were abandoned when Latin itself was, in favor of national languages, except the Italian one, which survives in Ecclesiastical Latin.

Since Latin is now little more than a scholarly subject of study, the currently favored pronunciation is the classical one, or the closest reconstruction we have. It differs from the Italian pronunciation in a few details, like distinguishing long and short vowels and not having the ?soft? variants of c and g.

I?m talking about what we usually call Latin, i.e., the learnèd varieties based on Classical Latin, but, of course, real Latin?the one the people spoke?never died out. It kept evolving and, due to the loss of political unity and the ensuing isolation of the different regions, it diverged into modern Romance languages.

So ? I?d like to know how to say ?blackberry? in modern Parisian Latin (a.k.a. French), in order to answer the riddle ?Quel fruit est rouge quand? il est vert??

I found it originally with the first word spelt ?quelle?. Since then, I?ve managed to learn it?s a misspelling; probably one made by native speakers, as it doesn?t seem to affect pronunciation. This didn?t stop the one who pointed it out (who wasn?t a native, by the way) from chewing me off for it, even though I never claimed to actually speak French
