The thing that hurt him the most was that he never got a foot in the door with decent media coverage. No one would cover him because he wasn't a serious contender, and he was never able to become a serious contender because he was never covered. Lovely little catch-22.
Plus, he was too intellectual for general consumption media. Most voters don't want to listen to a lecture on Austrian economic theory, they want to hear that we're going to beat up on those bad oil companies and give more money to the poor while magically eliminating the budget deficit. Further, they don't want to listen to ideas about "blowback" and attempt to understand the root of the problem in order to solve it, they just want to kill those bad Muslims so they can't be a problem any more.
