Ended up watching this tonight, as well as Romni, Michael Steel, Huckabee, Lingle, and Giuliani. I've gotta say, they got the crowd pretty well dialed in. Of course the biggest point of the night was Sarah Palin's speech. Like Barak, people had heard of her, didn't know a lot about her, her reputation already said a lot but everyone knew that a large part of how the campaign would go on from that point hinged heavily on just how good her opening speech was.

People were talking about her like she had Giuliani's kind of snarkiness, kinda like a conservative version of President Roselyn from BSG, they weren't too far off. Between going from PTA to mayor of a small town to being governor and fighting some of the oil lobbists, putting a natural gas pipeline in, turning down federal earmarks for the 'bridge to nowhere', getting rid of some of Alaska's own excessive spending, bringing surplus budget, raising 4 now 5 kids, and picking off a moose periodically. In addition, you have of course someone who fits the feminist ideal VERY well.....well, just not the way the left likes to see it done.

With all the smear tactics I can see why they're shook. When the VP debate does come around, I really think its going to be occasion for popcorn - Biden's going to need a lot of sedatives to keep him off the ceiling or in the same room with her (won't be too far from watching a bat and Ozzy Ozzbourne having a dialog). I'd also imagine any more that the media is going to throw at this will just be further endorsement. Also, major plus to see that we'll have TWO people going to the White House possibly who are there to get things done, there because of their concern for the U.S., and who could give to shakes what the elite 'thinks' (I have to parenthesize it, I'm not sure what their 'thinking' really qualifies for much).

After watching Sarah's speech I have to say that she did quite a good job with it and now I'm not sure if four more years with R. could be such a bad thing-- especially if she's involved. She really showed a lot of grey area for those who are more involved in strict black/white thinking. No matter what, I think whomever is elected is going to have to deal with what has to happen anyway (fuel costs raising, out-sourcing of jobs, maintain world relations, etc.)

I was happy to hear one of the news political analysts finally say what I've known all along: this is not a play to grab disillusioned Hillary voters, this is a human cruise missile aimed right at Obama's head. In order to have any chance at all, the Republicans need to turn Obama's strengths against him, and that is what the choice of Sarah Palin is about. That was prominently on display tonight during her speech, when she came out hard against Obama, turning his message against him, mocking his positions and turning his eloquence into a liability. Who better to deliver that message than a political outsider with hard line conservative credentials and massive appeal to the party base? I will be eagerly awaiting further developments, this campaign could get yet get interesting.

she might have turned down the 'bridge to nowhere' after it got bad press, but she lobbied congress for millions more in pork for her little town of 6000. Funny how that part didn't get into her speech.

Well, the media has decided to portray her as a reformer and outsider, a sort of young maverick, as McCain has also been branded a maverick.

Doesn't matter that both characterizations are dead wrong, the media's not going to change the portrayal of any politician over something as trivial as reality.

She was not chosen to attract the "Hillary" women. She was chosen to energize the base (evangelical, traditional conservatives)... whether or not she was meant to be a missile at Obama's head I don't know, but she is turning into that.

Of course she is going to be adored at the convention, and there will be a post-convention boost. That is fairly typical for any candidate and party. How she holds up over the next 10 weeks or so remains to be seen.

Actually, that characterization is coming from the McCain/Palin campaign, and the media is questioning it. The media has/is looking into such issues as her chameleon-like stand on the bridge to no where, accepting money from a lobbyist close to indicted Alaska politician Ted Stevens, and the fact that she in under investigation for impropriety in trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired. And then there is her stand on various issues.

Also, her 17-year-old daughter is 5 months pregnant!

Please don't take this the wrong way Ska, but I think you are reaching a bit with the "white trash" moniker. I understand your distaste for Sarah Palin, your vocal atheism makes that sort of preordained, I just think your choice of insult makes you come off as shrill and possibly uninformed, which I know you are not. She may be a religious fanatic that hunts and fishes, but she just doesn't have that low class vibe that marks true white trash. Notice how the Republicans have attacked Obama's eloquence obliquely, he's a "celebrity" or "all flash and no substance", but they haven't just called him something he's not. It's like insult judo, use your opponent's strengths against them.

and it has nothing to do with religion other than a bunch of fascists who've hijacked a religion much like how terrorists have done with the muslim faith.

screw strengths. she's white trash willing to sacrifice her family and stage a media shotgun wedding for the sake of her career when that shouldn't have anything to do with her qualifications. her daughter got pregnant? fine, that's her stuff to deal with. her announcing they're getting married and keeping the kid and using that as a political platform is throwing her daughter and some teenage schmuck to the wolves. it should have been quiet, it shouldn't have been announced either way other than saying she's pregnant. that says a lot about her personally that she's so willing to throw others into a bad situation for her own sake (rather less the fact that it's f*****g blood and you're not supposed to do that s**t to your own family).

and i could give less of a s**t about obama. i'm not voting for that cracker either.


this palin c**t really gets me going because she's the kind of self-righteous, any-means-are-justified-in-trying-to-get-to-the-ends, intolerant white trash. she tried to get rid of the librarian when she was mayor because the librarian said she wouldn't ban any books if palin asked. she's made other such abuses of power. there's also the bridge to nowhere that she loved until her political career was threatened which says a lot about her character and how much effort she puts into any decision making.

she's the christian version of osama bin laden. the only difference is what god and the means of getting there. political cutthroat vs real cutthroat...not much difference when the former achieves their fascist means more effectively.
