What I think is that an angry/disappointed/( gluten-affected, but that's my thing! ) part of you is carrying the ring, and tunnelling further and further into the roots of the mountains in search of knowledge. But in the end all there is to see is darkness and pale fish in dank pools.

I hope that your "Bilbo" turns up soon and finds the ring on the floor where a moment's inattention on the part of the resentful one has dropped it. That's what happened to me.
