I think the monarchy do benefit us, as ambassadors and diplomats, mabey, but I dont think they shoud be paid so much when all they do most of the time is smile for the camera. None of us get paid £millions per year, so why shoud they?

William and Harry have both been sent into the army so i guess they're doing their bit. But I agree that they are paid too much.

That depends - I woodnt be suprised if before long, the armys used to impose martial law in order to help ensure order wile Blair and New Labour make the transition to a totalitarian police state. In this case I wood say they are very much NOT doing their bit for the PEEPLE of this country. What do you value more, Yamaretsu? The peeple, or the state?

As for multiculturalism, NOBODY is a purebred English citizen if you go back far enough - even the CELTS were only the original colonists (as far as we know, there coud have been sumone before them I gess), they came from Eurasia just like everyone else.

That's always a possibility, in the short term. But, having a powerful armed forces, which are generally fairly conservative at the senior officer level, is also a safeguard against such things. If it did get really bad, they might stage a military coup and overthrow any government that was abusing it's power. There are plenty of precedents for this, in other parts of the world, btw.

I suppose that's why the left in the UK never like to spend too much on the military.

They can also choose to support the goverment, which is infinately more likely with conservative executive officers. The current goverment is all about putting security above basic Human rights and freedoms. A very right wing ideal, and one a lot of conservatives wood sympathise with.
