It could well be argued that Eisenhower was indeed a liberal- pushed for integration, built the Interstate Highway system, and has a few quotes that almost sound as though they're coming from an anti-war socialist.

Many of today's Republicans would argue that. But Eisenhower didn't leave the party, the party left him. I see him as a centrist.
