A pompon and pompom are both accurate. It is a prop in the hands of the girls on the pompon squad or dance team and cheerleaders. Cheerleaders often hold the smallest version of the pompons. A pompon is made of small thin colored plastic strips and the strips are held together by a handle. The plastic strips feel similar to a plastic grocery bag. It is transformed into a fluffy pompon by crumpling the plastic strips and adding static electricity to make it poof out.
