It's easy, it's famous and many probably know it too. But it's also fun!

So here it is.

First off:

In a street there are five houses each painted in a different colour.

In each house lives a person of a different nationality.

Each of these five house-owners prefers a different kind of drink, smokes a different brand of cigar and keeps a different pet.

I changed the clues to fit the German version... not just due to personal preference, but also because 1 English clue gave a detail too much away.

Who owns the fish?

Clues:

1. The British man lives in the red house.
2. The Swedish man keeps a dog as a pet.
3. The Danish man likes to drink tea.
4. The green house is left of the white house.
5. The owner of the green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall has a bird.
7. The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
8. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps a cat.
11. The man who keeps a horse lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The man who smokes Blue Master likes beer.
13. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
14. The German smokes Prince.
15. The Blends smoker has a neighbour who drinks water.

I used to love these little logic puzzles, but I'm too tired now to set up the graph that I'd need to solve it.

I've always felt that these puzzles structured in terms of words are "trick questions" because you could solve it right away if you did it visually.

I was at a leadership course once, not long ago, and we got given one of those riddles to solve. It was people in offices, not neighbours, and they had various clothes, ties, and modes of transport, rather than pets, cigars, and drinks, but the principle was the same. We worked on it for the amount of time given, but we just couldn't do it, there was still some ambiguity, and we couldn't prove our answer. After it was all over, I thought to look inside the envelope again... and the last clue fell out :x So I don't like those riddles anymore :P

Ooooh! Fish and Chips. You are making me hungry. I miss that since moving to France.

Re the puzzle... these things aren't difficult, just follow the trail of logic and each piece drops out. Unfortunately I don't have the time to spend on it at the moment, too busy working. :(

I did this on a spreadsheet and got the following results, listing the houses from left to right:

The Norwegian man has a yellow house with a cat, drinks water and smokes Dunhill.
The Danish man has a blue house with a horse, drinks tea and smokes Blends.
The British man has a red house with a bird, drinks milk and smokes Pall Mall.
The German man has a green house with a fish, drinks coffee and smokes Prince.
The Swedish man has a white house with a dog, drinks beer and smokes Blue Master.

Answer: the German man has the fish.
