I understood the puzzle immediately. I'm not even sure what my thought process was.
As for associating songs with certain emotions, I do that as well. Many times, the associated emotions have little or nothing to do with the lyrical content. Another similar thing I do is associating music with places. I hike often and always listen to music while hiking, or relaxing on a mountaintop. There are some albums I will always listen to when I hike certain places. When I listen to them at home, or in the car I feel those nostalgic feelings and long to return to those places.
What I dislike is when music becomes associated with negative and destructive emotions. For instance, I cannot listen to anything by The Cure without risking a complete emotional breakdown. I love their music, but hearing practically any song by them returns me to a state of heartbreak I felt after losing a girl I loved. Last year, we put the family dog to sleep. The opening segment of a song by Ulrich Schnauss (Gone Forever) reminds me of the way I felt, thinking about the light disappearing from my dog’s eyes as he slipped away. It’s an awfully sad feeling and the opening of that song reminds me of it and triggers an immediate response, tears.
