Don't you think WP should have "message trees." I don't know the proper word for it. What I mean is: you should be able to reply to replies. Rather than just having linear posting.

On the downside, non-linear topics would be a difficulty for some to follow. Me included.

I suggest you make a use of quotes a lot. Would that work?

phpbb is only flat threads.

Personally I find recursive threads really annoying, it make thing more cluttered for very little benefit. It is also slower to query, which is why you only see it nowadays in applications where the thread level/number of replies is going to be quite small.

This site is very slow already, you do not want to make it even slower.

Yeah, I guess using quotes works just as well.
