Sorry, I didn't mean it as an insult. :(

(I'd use the excuse that "my mind has been corrupted" by recent threads in the Adult section, but I know full well that it's my fault for starting it all with the Penis thread.)

Here is a question that should be easy.

Of the 42 independent cities in the United States, how many are in the Commonwealth of Virgina?

In defence of Aridarr's remark:
The title of this thread was misspelled as "The Virgina Test".
It's a short step from there...you get the picture.

And Americans get on the case of Canadians because we pronounce the
name of a certain city in Saskatchewan to rhyme with vagina
rather than to rhyme with Xena. (A company called Regina [rhyming
with Xena] used to make a series of upright vacuum cleaners called
the Electric Broom back in the day.)

Please forgive me for quoting a myraid of sources, as I am interested in geography but I am living in some overseas country called Singapore. I am just giving in my best shot here.

1. According to Wikipedia, VA has at least 2 nicknames, the Old Dominion (according to Popik, this is also the official State Nickname I think) and the Mother of Presidents. But from Tim Tex, there is a 3rd nickname, the Mother of States... Well there are certainly much more than three, but these three are the ones mainly used.

2. Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, named by Sir Walter Raleigh, though Virginia might be named for a local phrase Wingandacoa too (Stewart)

3. Potomac, James, York and Rappahannock.

4. 8. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison (though he lives mainly in Ohio), John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson (who is again associated with New Jersey). However, VA is still the cradle of presidents as the first three presidents alone are Founding Fathers that built the longest surviving functioning democracy in the world (or so I think).

5. The Commonwealth of Virginia

6. Virginia Beach, with 440 thousand people in 2008 (estimated). Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals hails from there. But wait. The largest metro area in Virginia is actually Northern Virginia, aka the Washington DC metropolitan area. Ah yes, is Mason located there as well?

7. 5 --- Tidewater, Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains (beautiful!), Ridge and Valley and the Cumberland Plateau.

8. Norfolk, part of the Hampton Road Ports, 6th busiest in US. LA and NY and SF and Seattle and New Orleans are busier...

9. Tim Kaine...

10. Jim Webb and Mark Warner

11. Jim Webb I suppose.

12. Floweing dogwood

13. The white flowers of flowering dogwood

14. Northern Cardinal

15. 120 I think.

16. University of Virginia (Flagship I think), Virginia Tech/Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Land grant), The College of William and Mary (one of the best liberal arts colleges in US, if not the top), Virginia State University (HBCU and Land Grant I think) AND George Mason University! There are more public universities but these are the 5 most prominent public unis in VA I know of.

17. Bluefield College, Hampton University, Randolph College, Washington and Lee University and Westwood College of Technology. Not as prominent as the public institutes though.

18. Williamsburg and Richmond, repsectively...

19. Norfolk

20. College of William and Mary, founded in 1693, and only Harvard is older... Though as a comprehensive research university I think UVa is the oldest.

Bonus: Mason, George Mason University to be exact. It makes me wonder why the youngest university in the state is also the 2nd largest? (VT has only 400 more students I think)

I think Liberty University is the latest to be chartered, one year older than Mason, but in terms of date of independence, Mason is still the youngest of all public Virginia universities. Am I right on this?
