I really don't understand how one would decipher magic eye pictures...

You can't consciously see them. The brain may or may not decipher the information depending on the way you look at the picture.

Have you ever looked at those 3D wire drawings of a cube? They seem to flip from being a cube to being a hollow box. Magic eye pictures are similar in the sense the brain suddenly changes what you are seeing.

You gotta look at them crosseyed. Hold a finger about 6 inches in front of your face in line with your nose, then while staring at your finger, you can see the image in your peripheral vision behind your finger.

Looking at them while you're really drunk and seeing double works as well. If you don't drink, take any blunt object and whack yourself over the head as hard as you can, then take a magic eye book with you for entertainment on the ride to the hospital.

1. Shark.

2. 3D Chessboard.

3. Several layers of tigers in the foreground.

It took me ages the first time years ago. I find them fairly easy nowadays. This is the first one time I've seen them on a computer screen, didn't know they worked on anything other than glossy paper.

For number one, is it lots of sharks? I think I could make out some blue fish like creatures...

No, it is one big shark swimming to the left. The shark has exactly the same speckled appearance as the picture - it is just like a pop up book and the shark is several inches in front of the background. Both the shark and the background are "painted" in the same speckled way. Just imaging cutting out the shape of a shark from the picture as it stands and having it several inches forward of the background.

I'm thinking that NT's all see magic eye pics as popping off the page, but that Aspies see it as behind a piece of glass.

How about it? Any Aspies here see magic eye pics as above the page, or are all us Aspies seeing it behind the page?

It depends on which technique you use to view them. Here is the Link explaining stuff more elaborately.

But then Aspies may tend to choose one technique over the other too.
