I got a strange message from a moderator saying that my email was invalid.

I checked it to make sure, and the address still works.

So what's the problem?

Checked your e-mail or checked what address you put in on WP? Maybe typoed?

Yeah, they said they'd try to resend whatever it is they were trying to send.

doesn't sound genuine, or something a mod should be doing.

What was the name of the mod?

It seems odd that he would send you that. He might have got confused because email validation algorithms are often very simplified and don't include all the possibilities within the specification.

The fact that you are posting here means you have a valid email otherwise you wouldn't have been able to confirm you account.

I would never advise people to publicise their email on a forum, that is just an invite for spammers. Otherwise he has no business emailing you directly. You are only to be emailed under the terms of service, and when you want to receive notifications.

When trying to send PMs recently, there have been several instances where WP has been unable to complete the operation. The attempt to contact via email failed, which led to the follow-up message. Anything further regarding this matter should be resolved between myself and the OP. Thank you.

That is a failure in the software.

Moderators may send emails for moderation purposes, but to use emails for personal communications when they haven't had consent of the reciprocate to use their email is not on. They shouldn't see the email addresses directly if the software is any good. Unless they have administrator permissions that is. This is fairly standard.

There isn't a sure fire way of validating an email other than the person responding. You can ping the mail server but that is not worth it, because they are often configured to block those request to prevent spammers from drawing up a list of valid accounts.

I've had problems like that on some web sites where the contact form has rejected my (valid) email address as not being valid. I came across the same problem from the other end too when setting up a web contact form - there are bugs and failings in common FormMail components that incorrectly reject correct email addresses. Good way for websites to lose contacts and even sales. The specification for email addresses is really quite vague as I recall - the only main requirement is to have an '@' in there somewhere, but some developers make up their own rules and forbid certain (legitimate) characters or restrict the length etc and in such cases chaos results.
